Ah, the New England Patriots. They are currently 12-0 after escaping Baltimore with a win on Monday Night Football. They have already clinched their division and with a win next week they can clinch homefield advantage throughout the playoffs. Personally, I don’t love the Patriots, but it is enjoyable watching them play. Brady’s cockiness and Belichick’s stern face and hoodie throughout every game is always entertaining. I remember the press conference after the Colts game, Brady was like “Yeah it was nice having a team actually compete with us for awhile there”, after he threw for 153 of his 255 yards in the fourth quarter. Belichick is a genius of a coach, using Mike Vrabel (a linebacker) on the goal line to catch touchdown passes, and using Junior Seau (another linebacker), to block for Laurence Maroney and Kevin Faulk as they run it in. Love them or hate them, you can’t deny that they are the best team in football.
Three of the last four of their wins have been by less than 4 points. Does this mean they are slipping and headed for a loss soon? Not necessarily. The Colts are the Colts, and even with their injuries that game should have been as close as it was. The Ravens have a solid defense, and if it weren’t for penalties and a few more yards on the last second hail mary, they may have won that game. The Eagles game was just a sloppy game for them, and with a game sealing interception by Asante Samuel, they did not have the chance for a final drive down the field. If the Patriots can beat the Steelers, I see no reason for them not to go undefeated, although it is my personal hope that they are 15-0 and then lose to the Giants in Week 16.There has been talk of the Patriots record being “tarnished” or “asterisked” such as Barry Bonds’ home run record because of the cheating incident in the first game of the season. Honestly, from what I’ve heard, the tapings happen a lot around the league, and if the Jets weren’t smart enough to change their signs at halftime, it’s their fault. And come on, do you really think the Jets would have won that game? Belichick running up the score every game after that was just a signal that they were not effected at all by that incident, and watching the Patriots able to just march down the field in the no huddle offense is hilarious. They are winning by an average of 22 points, and that’s including the previous games where the scores have been close. They average 39 points a game, and that is just unheard of. Their offense is so explosive and they have a ton of receivers to spread the ball around to. Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Dante Stallworth, even Jabar Gaffney, who caught the game winning touchdown last week against the Ravens. Watching them on third down, running a dump pass over the middle to Welker who just plows through the defense for the first down, or watching Moss catch the ball over 2 or 3 defenders is entertaining. They can score points in a hurry. Brady is playing as well as anyone has ever seen one quarterback play in a season. The defensive unit is solid, and personally, I think there is a very good possibility that the Patriots will go undefeated and go on to win the Super Bowl.

The words, “The older I get…” have been tumbling out of my mouth at an alarmingly high frequency lately. This is typically followed by some statement about my feelings on love, sex, or some other thing that at the time is relevant, but later will be rendered completely arbitrary and, if taken out of context, unrecognizable. Is this bad? Probably not, it adds some level of flavor to a conversation. However, it makes me question whether or not the things I’m saying are based on my age at all. If they are, why must I preface the change in my opinion with a qualification of my age? Perhaps it’s just me, but I don’t think that being 20 necessarily allows you to have an opinion that is qualified on anything.
To focus on a topic I seem to be discussing with everyone lately, but is never supposed to talk about in mixed company, I’m going to talk about sex for a second. It’s been an ideal that was instilled in most of us of a religious background that sex was something for marriage. Something that you saved yourself for until you’re wedding night. Someone may want to inform our middle schools of this, but that’s another issue. The issue that seems to be most on my mind however, is the idea of the right person.

Well, it looks like all those Space Monkeys really were brought back smart…or not, but then again, maybe they were smarter in the first place? This week, we have scientists who claim that chimps have been found to beat humans in a memory test, using visual perception. Three groups of individuals were used, baby chimps, adults (their mothers) and university students.
The experiment involved a series of numbers from one to nine being displayed on a touch screen. These were then blanked out, and the subject was expected to recall their position in numerical order. The findings of this experiment were that the young chimps were found to complete the exercise in a much faster time than was displayed by the students, suggesting that the visual and working memory is greater than that in humans.

Maybe one day, they’ll be teaching them proper skills instead of numbers, i’ve always wanted a Ninja Monkey…

Hard work is tough to use and define explicitly, as obviously it’s a very subjective ideal. But I would like to discuss it in a very rudimentary way, defining hard work as excessive and intensive focus towards a particular task or goal with the intent to complete it in a satisfactory manner. We all work hard, or at least pretend to at times, but what is the reward for hard work? In an ideal society, hard works reaps the benefits of what is sown. If you are the promoter/inventor/designer/manager of something, you are rewarded with financial compensation and recognition for your dutiful adherence to the item. It’s a capitalist dream; you work hard, earn your keep, and are proud of your work. It’s a communist dream; everyone working hard towards the same goal, which is the betterment of the nation, being provided for as necessary by the government you work for. (Simplified, yes, but please bear with me) The focus here isn’t the reward given for the work done; it’s not even really about capitalism and communism or any other form an economy or lifestyle. It truly is about sleep, but on a larger level, the implications of an article about sleep on education, and in turn, on life.
Snooze or Lose?
Summary of the above: Lack of sleep hurts academic performance.
While the claim made is not necessarily inaccurate, it does seem to neglect what are seemingly obvious factors which also affect the academic performance of children in general. Not just academics, but work ethic, social construction, the difference in a “well rounded” personality and that of a sociopath. As if struggling to stay on topic at all costs, the article only briefly mentions the idea of workload and pressure put on children in school. Articles appear almost weekly regarding how schools are emphasizing that children get into a career path as early as 3rd or 4th grade. Extracurricular activities are emphasized to the point that they almost become a second school session each day for the children. On top of that, some programs grow to the point that they begin to supersede normal school work in terms of importance. (Many can refer to the age old stereotype of football players in high school receiving preferential treatment, but this preferential treatment carries over to a LOT of programs) And the programs cease to be extracurricular at an increasing rate. The demands for institutes of higher education increase, service hours are demanded for entrance or graduation. ACT and SAT scores must be in the top 80%, while class rank must be in the top 90%+ to gain entrance to colleges and universities; I’ll come back to this in a bit, but for now, consider the reality of this for a child. They need to be able to attend 8 hours of school, participate in extra circular activities, do homework for school, do housework as dictated by parents/guardians, have their own social life, and get 8 hours of sleep a night to be good children on a healthy career path. There isn’t time for this; this is an unrealistic expectation, but a proposed requirement to succeed in life on a career path.

I want to discuss “that guy”. You know the guy…hell, you might BE the guy.
You know, the guy in his late teens/early twenties that feels like life is passing him by; the guy who stays home on a Saturday night and surfs the internet; the guy who has an empty feeling in the pit of his stomach that no amount of food can fill. It comes and goes, but there are days when you get filled with an overwhelming sense of loneliness, days when your bed seems far too big and you want nothing more than someone to share it with. You feel all alone in this huge world, and you long for that person that will accompany you on the journey. If any of those words struck close to home then I suggest you hunker down, grab a bag of Doritos, and get ready to receive the enlightening smackdown I am about to bestow upon your ass. I was once that guy and I’m sure many of you reading this might be in that exact same situation. I was once that guy which is why I can talk about this. I can tell you from experience that this “guy” feels his life is boring and incredibly routine, and without making any changes whatsoever secretly hopes and expects that that wonderful girl will simply fall on his lap. A beautiful girl that plays video games and makes sandwiches upon request, a girl that loves you for you and doesn’t care about your appearance…ah, wouldn’t that be wonderful? But guess what? THAT’S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN! Read the rest…

Let’s be honest. How many of you reading this can honestly say you have the confidence to perform in front of an audience numbering well into the hundreds? Would you get some butterflies caught in your stomach or the full shaking knees, nauseated, and hysterical package? A lot of you would probably shy away from performing in front a large crowd, while a small group of you would gladly take up the challenge. We could argue all day and whine and moan about it, but the thing that separates these two groups is simple: Confidence. I won’t lie, I’m an idealistic guy who’s young to boot, but already I’ve seen the massive impact confidence can have an individual. Read the rest…

Listen, I know what you’re thinking. “Holy crap, long distance relationships? This gullible retard is going to try to convince us that he has the best relationship ever, while his girlfriend is off banging some stud from class.” Well, that would make you wrong. Am I in a long distance relationship? Yes. Do I love it? No. I would rather have an in-person relationship? Any day. Do I love my girlfriend enough to make it work, though? Yes. And that’s what this article is about. How do you make a long distance relationship work, and how do you stick with it and stay happy? Take it from someone who has been doing this for almost four years, it’s work, but it’s possible. Read the rest…

Thanks to Drudge, I stumbled across this article. The title? “Show seeks to love match migrants and U.S. citizens.” Their goal? To marry off immigrants to the U.S. on temporary visas (almost entirely hispanic) to U.S. Citizens. They claim it proves that “love has no borders.” Instead, it simply proves that reality T.V. has no taste and sinks us lower and lower as a society. Lucky for us, this show has not been picked up, but I am actually expecting this show to be picked up by a cable network. Why? Because it’s drawing on the great Immigration debate and, with the Presidential elections in full swing, this show will garner attention and ratings as not only a horrible love show, but a political statement as well.
Let’s see what’s been placed on T.V. as “reality” recently and what’s upcoming:
